Chung Shek

Chung Shek is a Dutch artist who lives and works in London and is known for his skilfully detailed oil paintings of ballerinas and Koi carps.

One may recognise the graceful influence of the Old Masters on Shek’s practice: his approach to composition and structure, and of light and shadow, echoes that seen in the work of David, Ingres and Bouquereau.

Celebrating the body and its movement, Shek’s subjects are brought to life by detailed interpretations that give expression to emotion and sentiment. In his work, Shek not only captures the unique character and warmth of each individual, but transcends form to suggest their very essence: his beautifully painted subjects are at once grounded in their bodily likeness and momentarily removed from the unrelenting flow of time.
